Dagmar bumpers (also known as "bullet bumpers") is a slang time period for chrome conical-shaped bumper guards that started to appear on the entrance bumper/grille assemblies of certain American automobiles following World War II. They reached their top within the mid-Nineteen Fifties.

Derivation

The time period is derived from the notable bodily attributes of Dagmar, a buxom early-1950s television character known for low-cut gowns and conical bra cups. She was amused through the tribute.[1]

History

As in the beginning conceived by Harley Earl, GM Vice President of Design, the conical bumper guards would mimic artillery shells.[2] Placed inboard of the headlights on front bumpers of Cadillacs, they have been intended to each convey the picture of a rushing projectile and give protection to automobiles' front results in collisions. The similarity of those options to the then fashionable bullet bra as epitomized by buxom tv character Dagmar was inescapable.

As the Nineteen Fifties wore on and American automakers' use of chrome grew more flamboyant, they grew more pronounced. The black rubber tips they gained on the 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham and different fashions had been referred to as pasties.[2]

By the overdue Fifties, American automotive designers began to shed each rear tailfins and outstanding bumper guards.

Use

Postwar Cadillacs started wearing conical bumper guards within the 1946 type 12 months. In 1951 models, some had been raised into the grille. In 1957, black rubber pointers appeared. The component endured to become more pronounced in length via 1958, however have been eliminated within the 1959 Cadillac redesign.

Mercury sported Dagmars in 1953 throughout the 1956 style yr. Lincoln added Dagmars in 1960, with a black rubber ring keeping apart the body from the chrome tip.

Buick added Dagmars on its 1954 and 1955 fashions, in 1954 as a part of the bumper assembly, and moved into the grille in 1955.

Packard incorporated large Dagmars at the bumper in 1955 and 1956 fashions.

Full-sized Chevys in 1961 and 1963 also had small rubber Dagmars on the entrance bumper, and 1962 Ford Galaxie had small rubber Dagmars as an choice.

Other Iterations

In 1974, British motoring press implemented the name of statuesque British actress Sabrina to outsized pairs of sticking out rubber bumper blocks added to MG MGB, MG Midget, Triumph Spitfire and Triumph TR6 sports activities vehicles to satisfy reinforced US auto protection rules. The term, which used to be not commonplace within the U.S., lingered no less than to the mid-1990s in some areas.[3]
