Show morePiers Taylor and Caroline Quentin head to Norway, the place architecture is influenced by way of improbable landscapes and extreme local weather.
They begin on Vega Island, six hundred km north of Oslo close to the Arctic Circle. It is the lovely location of Vega Cottage, a truly far flung family retreat delicately perched on rocks and overlooking the beach. The architects' problem was to create a home that emulated the standard fishermen's huts close by and left the encompassing panorama completely untouched. The outcome is a beautiful but modest house - the epitome of Norwegian understatement. The second house on their journey is in Valldal, the place Summer House teeters on a cliff, overlooking the gorgeous fjords. Here, Jan Jensen, one in all Norway's most exciting architects, has created an eye-opening eagle's nest of a house. It is a mixture of spaces constructed into and across the rock face with a chain of increased bed room pods held aloft on stilts. There could also be a mammoth rock face in the lounge and an infinity pool striking in space. Caroline thinks this could be the best house she's ever been in.
House quantity 3 is a lakeside house in Ottestad. As its name suggests, Concrete House leaves behind the Norwegian norm of trees building for something more austere. This daring and resolute home is a dream come true for its owners Urda and Tom, who have at all times cherished minimalist architecture. But will Caroline, whose first impression is that it seems like a 'brutal hospital', be received over through a heat and fun inner and a relatively disconcerting array of apparently random windows? Weekend House sits on a tiny island one hundred metres from shore. The last development right here blew away in a typhoon 25 years ago, so it's been constructed as a fort in opposition to the weather. It has a heavy-duty bushes shell that uses 17 moving panels which open to transform the house and disclose a sumptuous but highly sensible interior. It is the easiest family bolthole for its owners Peter and Marianna, who use it to flee city life, fishing for lobster!
